L'AQUILA

L’Aquila railway station is one of the most important on the Terni-Sulmona line. This station was opened in 1875, as a temporary terminal station of the line from Pescara, while the remaining portion to Terni was still under construction. The station lies in the south west central area, being an interchange point to many urban bus lines, leading to the city centre and to the university. Nowadays only passenger service are run, having disappeared goods traffic some years ago; the last long distance service L’Aquila-Roma Termini via Terni was withdrawn in 1987. Passenger flow is mainly commuting (especially university students) . Many passenger facilities are provided: staffed ticket office, waiting room, WC, and a restaurant. There are 5 platforms for passenger trains and two bay platforms for former goods services. Next to the station the CTC building, managing the whole traffic on the line. Until summer 2008, Trenitalia was the only passenger trains operator serving L’Aquila; at that date FCU (now Umbria Mobilità) took over passenger service between Terni and L’Aquila, providing through services L’Aquila-Perugia (all through trains Terni-Sulmona were split up at L’Aquila station). Rolling stock passing through the station is composed entirely by diesel railcars (Aln668 Trenitalia for L’Aquila-Sulmona trains and Aln 776 FCU for L’Aquila-Terni trains). The 2009 earthquake damaged the station; the warehouse collapsed and the CTC was damaged beyond repair. Bay platform were used by night carriages trains to recover homeless until late 2009; a new CTC building was rebuilt in summer 2009.
