PAGANICA
Paganica is the biggest and the most popolate hamlet of L’Aquila, and until 1927 was incorporated into the Comune of L’Aquila. It lies at the foot of Gras Sasso mountain chain, dominating a great portion of Aterno valley. In 1875 Paganica was reached by the railway line from Pescara, and its station was located off the road leading to Bazzano, at some 2 km from the hamlet. This railway station generated a massive goods traffic, together with an high passenger flow. Since 1980s is unstaffed, and the only facility provided to passengers is the waiting room. There are two platforms, serving the running track and the passing loop. Nowadays goods service is totally disappeared, and passenger flow is mainly at commuting level; all trains running between Sulmona and L’Aquila call at this station, which is used to get to eastern L’Aquila, instead of using L’Aquila main station, which is further west. In front of the station there is a small parking lot and a suburban buses stop, creating a good interchange point. The April 2009 earthquake ravaged Paganica and nearby hamlets, slightly damaging the station which was restored during summer 2009. Upon the earthquake, some faculties of the University of L’Aquila, moved near the station, increasing commuting students flow. Since summer 2008 there are no more through services to and from Terni, with all westward trains terminating at L’Aquila railway station.
